Food, games, a toy giveaway and a visit from Santa welcomes Steel Brigade Soldiers and their families at the North Carolina National Guard’s 113th Sustainment Brigade Christmas party at their headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina, Dec. 4, 2016. Children and their parents waited in line for a chance to visit Santa. Then the families got a chance visit Santa’s workshop, usually a suite of offices off the unit’s drill hall, packed with dolls, games and toys of all types thanks to the Dollar Tree and Operation Homefront Other events included award presentations for several retired Soldiers and a holiday meal prepared by the unit’s cooks with help from the American Legion. Naval Base San Diego Navy’s Gold Star Program recognized Gold Star Families aboard Naval Base San Diego’s galley. Mercer Hall opened its doors to Gold Star Families, honoring them
through a special Veterans Day Celebration Meal. FFSC San Diego, Installation Navy Gold Star
Coordinator supported the event through an educational table highlighting the mission of the Navy Gold Star Program and resources for surviving families.

Pan heat 1/3 cup maple syrup with 1/2 teaspoon (or more!) of cayenne pepper powder. Add 3 cups unsalted mixed nuts (walnuts, cashews, pecans). Mix well. Bake for 10 minutes at 300 °F. Remove, sprinkle with teaspoon Kosher salt and tablespoon raw sugar. Cool.
Roast simmering in the crockpot. All that’s left to do is to shred and eat.
