Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the Manassas-based 229th Military Police Company, 1030th Transportation Battalion, 329th Regional Support Group gather with family and friends during their annual holiday meal Dec. 8, 2018, in Richmond, Virginia. Some of the unit’s members helped prepare and cook the meal, which was served to Soldiers and guests by the 229th’s leadership. Brig. Gen. For Annie Lou’s 2nd Birthday. Recipe courtesy of Nigella Lawson from her sumptous cookbook Feast (the recipe is titled Chocolate Honey Cake). This cake is dense, moist, very chocolate-y, and rather sophisticated with its rich honey flavor. Adorable marzipan honey bees (handcrafted by me, Mrs Patton) make this cake a perfect dessert for children and adults alike.

I’m fortunate to have a mom who’s a fantastic cook and baker… she’s taught me all the basic kitchen skills I know, and is responsible for instilling the love of food I have in me today. Her old cookbooks – though most lie collecting dust in the cupboard now – are amongst my favourite treasures of hers.
Although I may not make the recipe verbatim in one of her books, the basic formulae contained in their yellowed, stained pages are time-tested and true. This "health bread" recipe, from an ancient 35-cent mini-book, was re-written by me (on the notepage in the top righthand corner) to suit my current whims and pantry contents. Modifications and all, the loaves turned out perfectly – exactly as the recipe described. Tradition will never steer you wrong!
