Two layers of dense (but surprisingly light) hazelnut cake make a perfect sandwich for a luxurious chocolate frosting with a secret, healthy ingredient – avocado! It’s like Nutella on steroids!

My famously delicious birthday cake is that big purple round thing with the gaudy "20" on it… what can I say, I’m a kid at heart! The purple was my choice too… I joked that I used Barney guts for the frosting (note: no giant purple dinosaurs were harmed in the making of this cake!).

Crack Pie

…alternately, “I see a diabetic coma in your near future.”

Last of the Thanksgiving desserts I baked (or, at least the last one I’ll be posting–I also made a batch of these per my wife’s request). This is a recipe I’ve heard so much about I just had to try: the “Crack Pie” from Momofuku Milk Bar. I bought myself the cookbook, but the recipe is easily found online.

This is a variation on a chess pie, a family of pies that includes pecan pie, and a tooth-achingly sweet one at that. It uses a crust of oatmeal cookie crumbs, sugar, and butter, with a filling made of sugar, cream, egg yolk, and butter. It was tasty, gooey, and very, very rich, but being that I prefer less-sweet versions of pecan pie, this wasn’t exactly my, er, sweet spot. (Not that I’d turn away a slice.)

It’s not exactly the most photogenic thing, especially before it’s been cut. I took the remaining portion and shot it, backlit by a window, and with a white bounce card to keep the foreground from being overcome by shadow.

Chocolate cake mix, using Pepsi Max instead of the other ingredients required on the box (i.e., no butter, no eggs).

It didn’t rise a whole lot during baking, but it tastes just fine.

Buttercreme chocolate frosting, o’course.

For the 365 days group, day 196, and for those about to travel. I’m off to Montreal again till Friday. All the best while I’m gone again.

Oh yeah, I have invites to Joost. Email me if you would like one. I’ll send them all out when I get back. (PS need real email address from you for this to work.)

Chocolate cake cookies made with almond flour, coconut milk, coco powder, eggs. baking soda and powder to get a rise out of the dough. Frosting filling made with vegetable shortening, powdered sugar, and vanilla. Made for a friends caveman themed party where several of the guests were on the paleo or hunter gatherer diet.

Getting old is no fun; you have to be on a diet ALL THE TIME just to maintain your weight; losing weight requires fasting… which I guess I’ll be doing anyway during Lent.

This is my contribution to the flickrBINGO group; this week’s challenge is negative space. There is lots of negative space on my plate these days…..

We have a sunny bright morning, so this is natural light thru the kitchen window.
