Humphreys serves holiday meal

CAMP HUMPHREYS — Soldiers, Family members and civilians of United States Army Garrison Humphreys celebrated with a holiday meal on Dec. 9 at the Community Activity Center.

The event included a gourmet buffet, live music by the 8th Army band, and holiday trivia.

“We were faced with so many challenges this year, but it also has been a lot of fun”, said USAG Humphreys Commander, Col Joseph P. Moore. He also thanked directorates for their work during the past year.

“Leaders in Seoul have a lot of trust and confidence in Camp Humphreys, and those who worked hard for this organization deserve a lot of credit,” he said.

“This is a great holiday party and serves as a capstone to all the hard work”, added Command Sgt. Maj. Spencer, Gray, the USAG Humphreys senior enlisted Soldier. “We don’t get to see everyone at once, so this is a great time to meet others.”

CAMP HUMPHREYS – Every other Wednesday, from 11:30 a.m. until the food runs out, the United Services Organization, or USO, here provides a free program called “Lunchbox.”

This year, all USO free lunches are sponsored by the Exchange New Cars Sales and desserts are donated primarily by military spouses, like Michelle Sibinski, the wife of Chief Warrant Officer 2 Michael J. Sibinski, assigned to Company C, 302nd General Support Aviation Battalion. Michelle also works at the Camp Humphreys Commissary as a cashier.

“I have been in that situation when you don’t have anything and I just want to give back to my community what I have now,” she said. “This is a small community here, and pretty much everyone knows everybody, and, you know, doing these little things makes a big difference, especially, for those who are far away from home and family. Little closures like this help a lot and warm everybody’s heart.”

A group of volunteers led by Kap Brown, the USO duty manager, made all the preparations for the event and were serving a hearty meal for several dozen Soldiers.

“It is a lot of fun and it is very rewarding to give back,” said Rosie Majka, an Army wife who has been volunteering at the USO since last April.

The event has received very positive responses from Soldiers.

“I think it is a really great community outreach that USO is doing, and I know that the Soldiers definitely appreciate it,” said Staff Sgt. Brian R. Simon, assigned to 4-58th Airfield Operation Battalion.

The next USO Lunchbox is scheduled for Jan. 23. They will have hotdogs and desserts. For those who would like to donate something or have any questions, contact the USO at 753-6281.

2010-05-30 : Pie of Aloes
cook books
A sequence of images from the Spring Bank Holiday Weekend in the Tudor Kitchens at Hampton Court Palace.

Marc H. was making a recipe, ‘Pie of Aloes’. Aloes are fake larks (from the French) made of thinly beaten steaks of mutton (in this case) wrapped around a filling of boiled egg yolks and herbs (parsley?).

The ‘aloes’ are then baked in a pie, (a bit like "four and twenty song birds…").

However, the paste Marc made was a bit firm/crumbly he called on the expert hands of Robin to raise the pie crust and complete the pie. The end result was a bit "craggy" but it did hold together when baked. I didn’t see the final product, (it was eaten before I had a chance the next day) but Richard, (Tudor Cook), got a picture of it on his ‘Cooking The Books blog ( tudorcook.blogspot.com/2010/06/just.html ).
