Volunteers cart fresh bread into the Tukwila Pantry, Tukwila. WA, on Thursday, October 20, 2011. The pantry provides monthly food bank services to individuals and families in cities of Tukwila, SeaTac, Burien and the Boulevard Park community. Congregate meal service is held each Tuesday at their location in the Riverton Park United Methodist Church. The church provides some funds, several large rooms, and outdoor operating space for the pantry’s food distribution, shipping container storage units, trailer, tents, shelters and refrigeration truck. The pantry’s weekly Tuesday’s Table provides 150 hot meals to seniors, low-income families, homeless individuals and those in transition. Additionally, emergency referral services are provided to assist individuals connecting with agencies that can address their needs. Executive Director Joe Tice grew up in Tukwila and feels compelled to give back to economically challenged community of 25,000 families in 3,000 households. “Since the pantry’s founding in 2000, census figures show poverty has risen 300%,” said Joe Tice. “85-95% of elementary school children are enrolled in SNAP (U.S. Department of Agriculture Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).” At the pantry’s height, it delivered 3.8 million pounds of food (2009), but with the economic downturn Tice projects 2011 deliveries to total 2.6 million pounds. Tice considers Tukwila Pantry as one of the smaller distribution points in the greater Seattle area. Some canned and dry goods are provided by
The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) a Federal program that helps supplement the diets of low-income needy persons, including elderly people, by providing them with emergency food and nutrition assistance. A significant amount of the pantry’s food comes through Northwest Harvest, Washington’s only nonprofit statewide food bank distributor; and Food Lifeline, the largest nonprofit food distributor in the state who solicit, receive, and distribute over 24 million meals of food to nearly 700,000 people through our network of 300+ food banks (such as Tukwila Pantry), shelters and meal programs. Nags Head 2012 Memoirs 100 – Birded Again
family meals
Our son and daughter-in-law chose this location for this year’s spring trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, putting us right on the ocean front beach. It was a great location right beside Jeanette’s Pier, and the weather was so sunny. There were some windy days that made the waves all that much better. Besides our family from Ohio, we had friends visiting from several Congregations neighboring ours, plus a family that drove from mid-Texas and another from Indiana. As usual, we took turns making meals and it was a great experience with everyone fellowshipping and working together peacefully. Yes, I had one conference call with World Headquarters I did not want to miss, but it was still total relaxation. I tried to go a whole day without touching a camera, but then I got the shakes, and I just had to grab a camera and start snapping again; when you are hooked, you are hooked. To see photos from our past visits to Nags Head see the set of photos in our Travel Collection called Nags Head Memoirs; they are all dated.

The Fifth Annual Empty Bowls Project on Thursday February 5, 2015 at Saline (Michigan) High School. This fundraiser for Food Gatherers of Washtenaw County was an evening of food, entertainment and community as we celebrate an opportunity to help end hunger! Participants enjoyed a bowl of soup, fresh bread, beverage and dessert prepared by the Culinary Arts Students at Saline High School. Musicians at Saline High School provided the entertainment. They also got to take home a handmade ceramic bowl created by Saline Area Schools Art Students (grades 3-12) in celebration of the project. This is a great fundraiser that brings attention to hunger in our own community.

A big meal for a Ground beetle (Carabus cancellatus, ♂)

I found this male Carabus cancellatus (Körnerwarze) – among many Silphidae – feeding on a young European Badger (Meles meles, Dachs) which was killed by traffic the night before. My idea was to let the cadaver untouched as a biotope, certainly the rangers had a different opinion….

Carabus cancellatus ILLIGER, 1798 (Körnerwarze)
Subgenus: Eucarabus
Subfamily: Carabinae
Family: Carabidae (Ground beetle, Laufkäfer)
Suborder: Adephaga
Order: Coleoptera (beetles, Käfer)

Germany, N-Bavaria (Franken), ca. 30 km S Fulda: vic. Sinntal, 300-400m asl., 18.07.2010
