2013 – 3rd Annual Flyfest

More than 65 people attended the Third Annual PHWFF Flyfest held at Harman’s North Fork Cottages in Cabins, W.Va., Dec. 6-8. The event was hosted by the PHWFF Fort Belvoir and PHWFF Quantico Programs and more than 35 Warriors and several family members from seven different PHWFF programs fished 1 ¾ miles of the private access trophy trout stream during the three-day weekend trip.

In attendance during the weekend were Volunteer Guides and Warriors from the two local programs in addition to members from programs in Martinsburg, West Va.; Richmond, Va.; Atlanta, Ga.; Winchester, Va.; and Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center, Richmond, Va. For 14 Warriors, it was the first time they had traveled to Harman’s. Also, three professional fly fishing guides/instructors attended and donated their time to the event.

The air temperatures never rose above the upper 30s and often included wind chills in the teens with heavy rain and snow during the weekend’s festivities.

Bigg Riggs Farm, owned by Calvin Riggleman, an Iraq Marine combat Veteran and small farmer from Loom, W. Va., provided all meals for the three-day event.

Friday and Saturday evenings included Warrior raffles for prizes donated by supporters from around the country. Additionally, three small businesses donated products through the two PHWFF programs’ relationships on social media.

Evenings were filled with various fly tying instruction at different cabins to include wet flies, soft hackle flies, streamers and clouser minnows. Volunteers and professional guides provided the free instruction.

The stream had been recently stocked by Harman’s with rainbow and brown trout, ranging in size from 17 to 20 inches. However, due to extremely heavy rains on Friday, Saturday’s fishing schedule was pushed back and instruction on fly casting and fly tying were held during the morning and early afternoon. Fishing was limited to “shore only” during the afternoon. Even though fishing was limited, Warriors caught fish.

Sunday morning, attendees woke to a winter storm and many left early in the day. Those who were able to stay fished from shore. Five Warriors decided to extend their stay to wait for the storm to pass so they could safely travel home. (photo Lally Laksbergs)

Dec 9 Mumia March and Forum

Nearly 200 people braved cold and snow to show support for Mumia Abu-Jamal’s freedom at a march and forum in Philadelphia on Dec 9.

Activists marched around city hall despite the bad weather, stopping for rallies in front of the busy Christmas Village, the newly-installed Octavius Catto statue and the DA’s office before congregating for a meal in front of the Municipal Services Building provided by Food Not Bombs – Solidarity.

Among the participants were Marc Lamont Hill, Akeen Browder, Gregg Brinkley, Brett Grote, Jannie Blackwell, Vanessa Lowrey-Brown and others. Mumia himself was able to call in for some give and take with audience members during the forum.

The people’s movement forced the government to take Abu-Jamal off death row in 2011 but we didn’t win his freedom – the state re-sentenced Mumia to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

When he came down with hepatitis C, the people fought for and won hep C treatment, but now he suffers from cirrhosis of the liver and he continues to suffer pain and severe itching from a skin ailment.

Life Without Parole is still a death sentence.

Mumia’s current legal case could lead to his freedom – with enough mass pressure.

Mumia’s fight is part of the struggle against mass incarceration, against police violence and against white supremacy.

Mumia Abu-Jamal and tens of thousands of other prisoners are unjustly held in this state’s prisons.

September 06, 2006 – We’ve sponsored a World Vision child for a year and a half. On the trip to Sri Lanka we travelled far to a dry zone to meet up. The office in Canada helped us make arrangements. I am extremely impressed with the organisation.

The World Vision staff helped the family provide a meal to us as it was lunch time..

Here’s the blog entry for this day.

Waiting For A Connection

The family is switching Internet Service Provider. They were promised it would be a smooth transition. Alas, since yesterday there’s no connection in the house.

Mr Dobbs is not big on internet things, but likes to stay updated on the latest Kong products, plus he is active on a couple of forums.

He moved his favorite armchair next to the modem and is checking the flashing yellow light, wishing it would turn blue again.

More than that he perceives the increasing stress level in the household, voices are raised over the phone, fists periodically bang the table, a couple of words he’s never heard before were uttered. Nothing he’s supposed to repeat, or even know about.

Anyway, patience is an important skill for a guard dog, so he just keeps an eye on the blinking spot, hoping it won’t disrupt the meal schedule.

An Ango Thanksgiving

I explained the story of Thanksgiving, we went around the table talking about things that have been difficult this year and things that we have been thankful and then we shared a big family meal of goat, pondu, rice and brownies! A Thanksgiving I will never forget. Thanks Mom for the decorations! Also, I had no American flag, so the Californian flag worked perfect.
