Dec 9 Mumia March and Forum

Nearly 200 people braved cold and snow to show support for Mumia Abu-Jamal’s freedom at a march and forum in Philadelphia on Dec 9.
Activists marched around city hall despite the bad weather, stopping for rallies in front of the busy Christmas Village, the newly-installed Octavius Catto statue and the DA’s office before congregating for a meal in front of the Municipal Services Building provided by Food Not Bombs – Solidarity.
Among the participants were Marc Lamont Hill, Akeen Browder, Gregg Brinkley, Brett Grote, Jannie Blackwell, Vanessa Lowrey-Brown and others. Mumia himself was able to call in for some give and take with audience members during the forum.
The people’s movement forced the government to take Abu-Jamal off death row in 2011 but we didn’t win his freedom – the state re-sentenced Mumia to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
When he came down with hepatitis C, the people fought for and won hep C treatment, but now he suffers from cirrhosis of the liver and he continues to suffer pain and severe itching from a skin ailment.
Life Without Parole is still a death sentence.
Mumia’s current legal case could lead to his freedom – with enough mass pressure.
Mumia’s fight is part of the struggle against mass incarceration, against police violence and against white supremacy.
Mumia Abu-Jamal and tens of thousands of other prisoners are unjustly held in this state’s prisons.
