For Annie Lou’s 2nd Birthday. Recipe courtesy of Nigella Lawson from her sumptous cookbook Feast (the recipe is titled Chocolate Honey Cake). This cake is dense, moist, very chocolate-y, and rather sophisticated with its rich honey flavor. Adorable marzipan honey bees (handcrafted by me, Mrs Patton) make this cake a perfect dessert for children and adults alike.

I’m fortunate to have a mom who’s a fantastic cook and baker… she’s taught me all the basic kitchen skills I know, and is responsible for instilling the love of food I have in me today. Her old cookbooks – though most lie collecting dust in the cupboard now – are amongst my favourite treasures of hers.
Although I may not make the recipe verbatim in one of her books, the basic formulae contained in their yellowed, stained pages are time-tested and true. This "health bread" recipe, from an ancient 35-cent mini-book, was re-written by me (on the notepage in the top righthand corner) to suit my current whims and pantry contents. Modifications and all, the loaves turned out perfectly – exactly as the recipe described. Tradition will never steer you wrong!
