Just incredible — The Little Saigon Cookbook, drawing on recipes from the Vietnamese diaspora that settled here in OC. A great score for our Southeast Archive at the library, and a marvelous book for an aspiring cook like me!

More-With-Less Cookbook
suggestions by Mennonites on how to eat better and consume less of the world’s limited food resources, Written by Doris Janzen Longacre, ISBN 0836117867
I bought this book in 1977 and have used it ever since. I noticed a few weeks ago that it has been reissued. Just in time – besides the great recipes, it’s a concise and friendly primer on staying healthy with fewer resources. And it’s got a terrific section on equivalents and substitutions – it’s very practical.
Mapleine Dainties cookbook

This cookbook is undated but is probably from the 1900s-1910s (ads in 1907-1914 mention this booklet, and nothing in the contents contradicts this early date). Lots of interesting recipes using Mapleine, from Seattle’s Crescent Manufacturing Company. I will be doing a post about Mapleine on ResurrectedRecipes.com soon.
I should add that there were versions of Mapleine Dainties right up to the 1920s. The design of this one is clearly earlier, though. (There is a later edition with a blue cover and possibly 1920s-style graphics, for example.)

The Star Wars Cookbook

Grade 3-5-Twenty-nine recipes, divided by subject, include "Tusken Raider Taters," "Yoda Soda," "C-3PO Pancakes," and so on. Really, they are ordinary, basic recipes, clearly written, and easy to make. Much prepared food is called for, from refrigerator pizza dough to Kit Kat candy bars. The illustrations are a surrealistic combination of food and Star Wars figures that are the same size as or smaller than the featured dish. The spiral binding enables the book to lay flat, the pages are plastic coated, and there are stickers in the back. Some adults may be annoyed by the coyly clever tone, but most kids will like it because it’s Star Wars.

A 1970’s cookbook published "in solidarity with the Symbionese Liberation Army." Probably the most unusual in my small collection of out-of-print cookbooks. I wrote about it a bit here.
