Pork stomach soup with scallops, abalone and ginko seeds

A favourite soup made from base chicken soup with scallops, abalone, pig’s stomach, ginko nuts, button mushroom. The soup tastes better the longer it is boiled so families usually cook a generaous portion to be consumed over the next few meals.

AG visits Youth Camp, recognizes volunteers

Image by Virginia Guard Public Affairs
Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the Adjutant General of Virginia, visits the 10th annual Virginia National Guard Youth Camp July 30, 2015, at Camp Pendleton in Virginia Beach, Va. The weeklong camp is presented by the Virginia National Guard Family Programs Office and offers the children of Virginia military members a wide variety of outdoor and indoor activities, as well as trips to Ocean Breeze Water Park, the Virginia Aquarium and Busch Gardens. After a full day of activities, campers conducted a flag folding ceremony prior to the evening meal, then took turns signing each others camp t-shirts. In addition to talking with campers, Williams also thanked the many adult and youth volunteers whose efforts make the camp possible. (Photo by Cotton Puryear, Virginia National Guard Public Affairs)
Hostel/Orphange Student with His Free Meal

The Dharmarajika Orphange & Hostel services a total of 400 students – 15% of which are orphans and the remaining 85% coming from families too poor to be able to support their children. Almost all of the children come from tribal regions in the Chittagong Hill-Tracts of Bangladesh (an extremely poor part of Bangladesh). Although the majority of the students are Buddhist, the place is multicultural and also has Hindus.
In this photo, one of the hostel students picks up one of his regular free meals. Staff at the orphanage tell me me that, given the expensive cost of food, they usually have to skip meat products (fish, chicken, beef, etc) and stick with rice & vegetables only.
Another Small Business Closure

A buddy of mine who’s a retired Army Medical Service Corps Non Commissioned Officer is being forced to close his coffee shop on Christmas Eve after five years of working his ass off getting it up and running and being successful. This is what the .00 minimum wage in New Jersey does to small businesses. It destroys them.
He has about 10 or 11 employees. All of whom are high school / college kids who aren’t depending on their paychecks to support a family. For most, it’s their first job. My buddy bends over backwards to let them work whenever they can when they aren’t going to school or have other academic requirements. No big corporation they could possibly find a job with is going to bend over backwards like he has to work with their schedules.
The lease for the coffee shop is coming up and his accountant told him that he’d have to double his sales to make it financially viable. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen.
This is the future of small service oriented businesses in New Jersey and other states who impose an artificially high minimum wage. They shut down completely or eliminate jobs. Both of my local McDonald’s now have computer stations for customers to order their meals. There’s a local high-end grocery store (Wegman’s) that just put in 12 self-service lanes. That’s at least 24 jobs or more they were able to eliminate. That’s your .00/hour wage. No job.
I flew out of Terminal C of Newark Airport in October. There are tons of restaurants and shops. Every bar/restaurant and shop has eliminated most of the hourly workers. Every seat at a restaurant/bar has a tablet you use to order your food/drinks and a runner brings it out. Same thing if you’re buying a coke or bag of chips to take on a flight. You scan and pay for your purchases yourself.
Small businesses have warned the public about what would happen if you establish an artificially high minimum wage. Looks like they were right on the mark. Goodbye entry-level jobs.

Nags Head 2012 Memoirs 19 – The Pier

Our son and daughter-in-law chose this location for this year’s spring trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, putting us right on the ocean front beach. It was a great location right beside Jeanette’s Pier, and the weather was so sunny. There were some windy days that made the waves all that much better. Besides our family from Ohio, we had friends visiting from several Congregations neighboring ours, plus a family that drove from mid-Texas and another from Indiana. As usual, we took turns making meals and it was a great experience with everyone fellowshipping and working together peacefully. Yes, I had one conference call with World Headquarters I did not want to miss, but it was still total relaxation. I tried to go a whole day without touching a camera, but then I got the shakes, and I just had to grab a camera and start snapping again; when you are hooked, you are hooked. To see photos from our past visits to Nags Head see the set of photos in our Travel Collection called Nags Head Memoirs; they are all dated.
