The cards chart the health of a family’s children and also contain educational information about best health practices for the entire family. Health extension workers are government-paid health workers, often working in their community of origin, who provide community-based health promotion and disease-prevention services. Today, the Government’s Heath Extension Programme deploys over 36,000 health extension workers who bring health services to the doorsteps of people, mostly in rural areas. Through the joint EU-UNICEF nutrition programme, which supports the Health Extension Programme, Ms. Mohammed explains, women bring their children to the health post on a monthly basis for growth-monitoring sessions and nutrition counselling, and the health workers also conduct door-to-door visits. “Before the nutrition programme started,” she said, “the community had a problem [with] a lack of awareness, and the community never provided locally available food to the children. … Due to the fact that the mothers are understanding the messages in the family health card, there is a big change. Previously when their children became under nourished, they used to take them to the traditional healers and wait until they become close to death, and they never took them to the health facility. … Currently … they started bringing malnourished children from each village to the health post. Previously, a pregnant mother never took proper care of herself. If she feeds her child and her husband, she considers it as if she has eaten herself, and she doesn’t eat. Now she takes a shower, takes a rest and then takes an extra meal a day, added [to] the usual daily intake. … There is a big change.
In July/August 2014, Ethiopia is nearing the end of a joint European Union (EU)-UNICEF national nutrition security programme that is building on government-led efforts to permanently reduce the rates of under-five child and maternal under-nutrition. The programme is part of a four-year (2011–2015) UNICEF/EU global initiative, with multiple regional, national and community partners. It focuses on four countries in sub-Saharan Africa and five in Asia but aims to influence nutrition-related policies throughout these regions. The Africa programme – Africa’s Nutrition Security Partnership (ANSP) – focuses on Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Mali and Uganda. It is intended to benefit directly 1 million children and 600,000 pregnant and lactating women – and to benefit indirectly 25 million children and 5.5 million pregnant or lactating women across the continent over the long term. At the macro level, the programme builds policy capacity for nutrition security; institutional capacity; data and knowledge sharing; and the scale-up of nutrition interventions. At the national and district levels, it promotes government and community ownership of development processes, including training, mapping and the mobilization of intra-community networks, such as women’s groups. And it utilizes a cross-sector approach, combining nutrition, health, water and sanitation, agriculture and social protection interventions to maximize the positive effects on child and maternal nutrition. The goal is generational change in both institutional and individual beliefs and actions on nutrition – contributing, as well, to the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). ©UNICEF Ethiopia/2014/Nesbitt

More than 60 attended the 4th Annual Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Fly & Ice event at Harman’s North Fork Cottages in Cabins, W.Va., March 7-9. The event was hosted by the PHWFF Fort Belvoir and PHWFF Quantico Programs and more than 35 Warriors and several family members from six different PHWFF programs fished 1 ¾ miles of the private access trophy trout stream during the three-day weekend.
In attendance at the three-day event were volunteer Guides, Warriors and family members from the two local programs in addition to members from programs at Camp Lejeune, N. C.; Martinsburg, W.Va.; Wilmington, N.C.; and Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center, Richmond, Va. For 14 Warriors, it was the first time they had traveled to Harman’s and 11 had never fly fished.
The air temperatures were pleasant on Friday and on Saturday, rose into the mid 50s. Sunday’s weather cooled down, but that didn’t keep anyone off the water.
Bigg Riggs Farm, owned by Calvin Riggleman, a Marine Iraq combat Veteran and small farmer from Loom, W. Va., provided all meals for the three-day event.
Evenings were filled with various fly tying instruction at different cabins to include wet flies, soft hackle flies, streamers and clouser minnows and rod building. Volunteers and professional guides provided the instruction.
Saturday evening included Warrior raffles for prizes donated by supporters from around the country. Additionally, several custom-designed United States Marine Corps rods, built by Doug Rink – Fort Belvoir PHWFF alum and owner of Mad Fly Angling – were presented to Marine Veterans at the Saturday evening event.
Saturday evening also included a performance by The Buck Mountain Spring Band (all members from West Virginia) who stopped by to play some original Appalachian music for everyone.
The inaugural “Iron Fly” Fly Tying Competition was held over the weekend with judging on Sunday morning. Several attendees participated and the winner was a young family member of one of the Warriors.
The stream had been recently stocked by Harman’s with 1,000 pounds of rainbow and brown trout, ranging in size from 17 to 20 inches. Guides and Warriors caught fish throughout the weekend, including many of the new Warriors who attended for the first time.

More than 100 Advance Individual Training Soldiers where matched with local community members at the annual Thanksgiving Adopt-a-Soldier meet and greet event at Eifler Fitness Center here Nov. 20, 2018. Soldiers will enjoy a meal at the home of their adopters on Thanksgiving Day. The event is an opportunity to meet, discuss food and activity preferences and coordinate travel arrangements. This popular adoption event provides a break in the training routine for Soldiers, many who are experiencing their first major holiday away from loved ones.

Mwajuma answers questions

Mwajuma was orphaned from a young age and lives with her grandmother and 13 siblings. She knows from experience what it’s like to go hungry and is often forced to skip meals.
She’s a passionate young campaigner for Save the Children and a journalist – determined to speak up for those who suffer from malnutrition and determined to work hard so that in the future her family doesn’t have to suffer.
