Alinea Cookbook: PB&J

Inspired by both the blog Alinea At Home (http://alineaathome.typepad.com/) and by Grant Achatz’ comment from the November 2008 issue of Chicago magazine where he said:
"…the recipes are not hard. I challenge anyone to find a recipe in that book that is more complicated than your basic scratch chocolate cake,”
I have taken it upon myself to cook as much from the Alinea cookbook as I can.
I don’t mean to be a braggart, Mr. Achatz, but I make a mean chocolate cake.
For my first experiment, I’ve made Alinea’s take on the American lunchbox classic, PB&J.
It ain’t perfect, but I’m damn proud of how these eight little bread and PB wrapped grapes turned out.

Maj. Craig Minor sits down for a family meal at his house with his 22-year-old son, Mitchell in downtown Cedarville Ohio. Mitchell was infected with cytomegalovirus, a virus that causes enlargement of epithelial cells and results in serious disorders in newborns. He has the development of a 1-year-old. He can’t talk, walk, or move on his own, but he communicates his pleasure at seeing his father with his eyes and smile. (U.S. Air Force photo/Master Sgt. Jeremy Lock)

In 1863 Emperor Alexander II called the representatives of the Finnish estates to Helsinki. The troops of the Emperor were quenching a rebellion in Poland.
Finland’s position developed the opposite to Poland, which lost its autonomy because of local uprisings. The mid-19th-century war of Crimea had shown that Russia, which had in the past beaten Napoleon’s army, could not defend itself against the armies of Britain and France. To restore the might of the empire, Alexander II authorized a number of reforms in the entire Russian Empire, including in Finland.
These reforms were carried out by the Finnish estates: the nobles, the clergy, the burghers, and the land-owning peasants, who gathered to the Diet, no longer called "maapäivät" ("Land Diet") but "voltpäivät" ("state assembly") instead. The word "valtio," meaning "state," had just been introduced into the Finnish language, and in the 1860s the idea developed in Finland that the Grand Duchy was a separate state connected to Russia only through the emperor. The Finnish state and the Finnish nation were born in the 19th century.
The opening speech by Alexander II was the high point of the period of reforms, and the celebrations during the emperor’s visit were the most spectacular during the imperial era. During this period, industrialization and urbanization took place in Finland, railways were constructed, municipalities and parishes were established as separate entities, schools were established and the status of the Finnish language was improved.
