OUR AGA……..The HEART of our home. A lovely way to spread warmth and love throughout the home.

We bought our 1927 detached house in 1989. Formerly it was the home of the National Coal Board North East area manager, who enjoyed all the benefits of a free home, free coal, free maintenance , free everything. All of the large principal rooms/bedrooms had coal fireplaces, the kitchen had a coal fired central heating (only three radiators) boiler and a coal fired cream coloured AGA cooker. The property only had (3 phase) electricity because of its remote private location), no gas supply and a meterered water supply. I spent the first six months completely rewiring ALL the electrics to the six bedrooms and four downstairs reception rooms, building a new shower room in the hall cloakroom, installing a proper modern bathroom and double glazing all of the thirty four Georgian pane sash windows, implementing a new gas supply and converting the coal fires to coal effect gas fires. I finally managed to bin the horrendous kitchen (which had scaffold like central heating pipework across the ceiling to the large heavy cast iron "school" type radiators in the cloakroom, bathroom and reception rooms!!
The next big project was a complete replacement of all the plumbing and central heating. Eventually, we finally managed to bin the old AGA cooker and boiler and replace them with the brand new four oven AGA cooker you see here.. Over a period of several years I managed to completely transform the half acre garden with many features and (what has now become) a beautiful selection of mature conifers, stream and a self build log cabin cum summerhouse/ office.
Its still an ongoing project but nowadays I do lack the drive and enthusiasm I had in my youth. Finally we have a wonderful home in which we have to isolate ourselves. No more trips to our "local" for the forseeable!!
