Manager of Key Food Marketplace (West Brighton, Staten Island)
Shot Of The Day: July 23, 2018
What is there about the Forest Avenue Key Food that is special? Hmm…several things: 1) I am vegan and I eat broccoli daily, I love it – even more so since I heard the Bush clan doesn’t like it. I also LOVE avocados. And brussel sprouts. Key Food in West Brighton has the best produce on Staten Island. Period. 2) You want something they don’t have or don’t have a lot of? Tell Derrick. D is one of the store managers and he will get whatever you want. I eat a lot of Tofu (vegans needs a protein source) and Derrick makes sure there is a large supply of "House Foods Tofu Cutlets" on hand at all times. This lightly browned super firm Tofu is ONLY AVAILABLE at Key Food. 3) In addition to being vegan I have Celiac Disease which means I am just insufferable when it comes to meal prep, my family throws their hands up in the air – Derrick and Key Food to the rescue. They have a number of gluten-free items including the wonderful Schär table crackers. So, Key Food has the best produce on the Island (by a mile), they have esoteric items for both vegans and gluten-free people and they are a community based grocery store on a main artery in the North Shore with a decent size parking lot. But have I forgotten anything? Yes… Key Food is a union shop – UFCW Local 1500. The only knock on KF is that they are a little pricy compared to the huge chain stores. I really don’t mind – they are union, they carry esoteric items I really like and they will order anything you want. Take that Stop N Shop!!
Backstory: This is the aforementioned Derrick, one of Key Food’s managers. If you need something, ask Derrick.

CAMP HUMPHREYS – The Strike Zone Bowling Center did not ‘strike out’ as it hosted the “Killer of a Thriller” pre-Halloween costume party, Oct. 28.
This event had a Michael Jackson theme and was filled with games and prizes. Among the competitions were “Best Moon Walk,” “Best MJ Look Alike,” and “Spookiest Costume.” Many of the prizes were lunch or dinner meals from the Alaska Mining Restaurant.
“It’s good fun, good entertainment and the music is really good,” said Mitch Dolliver-Myers, from the 532nd Military Intelligence Battalion. “The live band is really good and a nice touch. Many of the songs they sang are really, really good.”
Auto Reverse was the band and they sung some favorite MJ songs, including “Thriller” and “Black and White.”
“I like the Michael Jackson Thriller theme, because I love Michael Jackson,” said Pfc. Childress Timeka, assigned to Headquarters Support Company, 602nd Aviation Support Battalion.
Aaron Bowie, 11, was there with his family. He said that the party was “awesome because I get to be with my family.” His brother Ronnie, 15 said that he was entertained by the event and the highlight of this occasion for him was, “My last game, I just scored a 164.”

Army Secretary McHugh visits Humphreys

HUMPHREYS GARRISON — Secretary of the Army John McHugh visited USAG-Humphreys Tuesday to see the installation’s progress of transforming into the future home of U.S. Forces in Korea and to meet with Soldiers and Family Members.
McHugh, the 21st Secretary of the Army, had lunch with Army spouses, received an overview of the garrison’s transformation from Col. Joseph P. Moore, Humphreys garrison commander, toured the Super Gym and met with members the installation’s Better Opportunity for Single and Unaccompanied Soldiers.
Approximately 15 Humphreys’ spouses ate lunch with McHugh in the 501st Military Intelligence Brigade Dining Facility, and after the meal the top leader of the Army opened the floor for questions. Veteran benefits, housing issues, spousal employment and the pros of using Host-Nation medical facilities were some of the topics discussed. McHugh thanked the spouses for not only their Soldier’s service, but theirs as well.
Following lunch, McHugh, along with Lt. Gen. Joseph F. Fil Jr., commander, Eighth U.S. Army, Brig. Gen. John Uberti, commander, Installation Management Command Korea, and Command Sgt. Maj. Robert A. Winzenried, command sergeant major, U.S. Forces Korea, traveled out onto the garrison’s newest land and received an overview of Humphreys’ role in USFK’s transformation from Moore.
On the last leg of his trip, McHugh checked out the Super Gym and its amenities before receiving a BOSS brief from Command Sgt. Maj. Jason K. Kim, Humphreys command sergeant major. Kim explained the activities and initiatives of the garrison’s BOSS program and then BOSS President, Staff Sgt. Lora Kelly, presented McHugh with a polo shirt.
