AG visits Youth Camp, recognizes volunteers

Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, the Adjutant General of Virginia, visits the 10th annual Virginia National Guard Youth Camp July 30, 2015, at Camp Pendleton in Virginia Beach, Va. The weeklong camp is presented by the Virginia National Guard Family Programs Office and offers the children of Virginia military members a wide variety of outdoor and indoor activities, as well as trips to Ocean Breeze Water Park, the Virginia Aquarium and Busch Gardens. After a full day of activities, campers conducted a flag folding ceremony prior to the evening meal, then took turns signing each others camp t-shirts. In addition to talking with campers, Williams also thanked the many adult and youth volunteers whose efforts make the camp possible. (Photo by Cotton Puryear, Virginia National Guard Public Affairs)

CAMP HUMPHREYS – Every other Wednesday, from 11:30 a.m. until the food runs out, the United Services Organization, or USO, here provides a free program called “Lunchbox.”
This year, all USO free lunches are sponsored by the Exchange New Cars Sales and desserts are donated primarily by military spouses, like Michelle Sibinski, the wife of Chief Warrant Officer 2 Michael J. Sibinski, assigned to Company C, 302nd General Support Aviation Battalion. Michelle also works at the Camp Humphreys Commissary as a cashier.
“I have been in that situation when you don’t have anything and I just want to give back to my community what I have now,” she said. “This is a small community here, and pretty much everyone knows everybody, and, you know, doing these little things makes a big difference, especially, for those who are far away from home and family. Little closures like this help a lot and warm everybody’s heart.”
A group of volunteers led by Kap Brown, the USO duty manager, made all the preparations for the event and were serving a hearty meal for several dozen Soldiers.
“It is a lot of fun and it is very rewarding to give back,” said Rosie Majka, an Army wife who has been volunteering at the USO since last April.
The event has received very positive responses from Soldiers.
“I think it is a really great community outreach that USO is doing, and I know that the Soldiers definitely appreciate it,” said Staff Sgt. Brian R. Simon, assigned to 4-58th Airfield Operation Battalion.
The next USO Lunchbox is scheduled for Jan. 23. They will have hotdogs and desserts. For those who would like to donate something or have any questions, contact the USO at 753-6281.
